Papers pertaining to the slave trade include printed broadside, 25 Sept. 1852, "Gang of 25 Sea Island cotton and rice Negroes [to be auctioned] by Louis D. De Saussure," Ryan's Mart, Charleston, S.C., listing slaves grouped in family units, including name, age, and skills; and letter, 11 Feb. 1854, Charleston, S.C., to "Dear Frederick," re slave trade, prices expected for various individuals, noting sale of Silta and her family, mentioning possible sale of Jack, a slave who had been ordered sold out of state, and relaying message from Jack, who asks to be taken back. Collection also includes document, 20 June 1853, authorizing organization of Catawba Lodge of Odd Fellows at Lancaster, S.C., signed by DeSaussure in his capacity as Grand Master.
